Ornette Coleman's landmark album, 'The Shape Of Things To Come,' came out in 1959.

Saxophonist and composer Ornette Coleman died Thursday, June 11, at age 85. He was one of America's musical originals, a visionary whose music may have startled some of its first listeners in the 1950s, but which proved to be full of joy, passion, and vitality. David Garland presents a selection of Coleman's recordings that should please aficionados, and also serve as an introduction for anyone curious about Coleman's music. Coleman had a one-of-a-kind mind, evident in his conversation as much as in his music, and included are excerpts of Coleman's comments in his 2006 Soundcheck interview with John Schaefer.
