For decades, most evangelical Christians have reliably aligned themselves with the G.O.P. And though that pattern has continued in 2016 despite Donald Trump’s questionable values, there are prominent dissenters, among them Russell Moore, the president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Convention. The New Yorker’s Kelefa Sanneh, who profiled Moore for the magazine, speaks to the theologian, whose stance isn’t solely a rejection of Trump. He believes evangelicals should rethink their relationship to politics altogether.
