The Socrates of the NSA

Email a Friend

Buried in the trove of NSA documents leaked by Edward Snowden was a series of internal opinion columns on the topic of signals intelligence, entitled The SIGINT Philosopher. The column's author wrote with wit, candor, and passion about the philosophical underpinnings of NSA surveillance, including his personal belief that total surveillance leads to increased liberty. The Intercept's Peter Maass tracked down the in-house Socrates for a recent profile, and tells Bob Garfield about the philosopher's fascinating journey to the NSA.
