Should Your Boss Track Your Fitness?

The carrot is up to 30 percent off your monthly premium if you join an eligible "workplace wellness" plan.

It's all part of the Affordable Care Act (we know it as Obamacare).

But what if you had to wear an activity tracking technology like Fitbit or UP by Jawbone that measures your movements and calories burned? And what if you employer could see the results?

Reporter Stan Alcorn meets the employees at Tasting Table where the boss offers his employees health trackers. They can compete (or "exercise") with one another for who's the fittest at a company that promotes food and drink. It's not mandatory nor tied to health care costs, but those in the health care industry think we may be seeing the future, where employers tie health care discounts to fitness goals.

Sure, why not?

If the payer has the choice, then why not? it gives the insurer more accurate data with which to measure risk, parallel to the car insurer measuring your driving behavior.

A more insidious use of tracking technology is the cop who just sits on the side of the road staring at his laptop as it scans the identities of the owners of every single car driving by -- instead of driving around enforcing laws and helping people.

This is overall a good story, but it actually has nothing to do with the Affordable Care Act. Corporate wellness programs are driven by companies' desire to improve productivity and push their insurance premiums down. That has been happening long before the signing of the ACA, and there are no special levers in place pushing this forward in the ACA to which these businesses would be responding now.
