See How a Post Office Gets Turned into a Train Station

WNYC News | Aug 17, 2017

Demolition inside the Farley Post Office is nearly complete: 800 tons of steel and 6,000 tons of concrete have been carted out. The floor where postal workers once sorted the mail has been entirely removed, providing a direct view from the ground of skylights and historic steel trusses, and revealing just how spacious Moynihan Train Hall will be once it's complete.

The $1.6 billion project will provide more ways for Long Island Railroad and Amtrak riders to reach the train tracks below — the same ones that also run underneath the existing Penn Station on the other side of Eighth Avenue. The hall will also  include 700,000 square feet of mixed retail and commercial space. The expected completion date is the end of 2020.

Next week scaffolding will go up around the building and the mechanical and electrical systems will be installed. We got a sneak peek at the interior during this transitional phase. See those images below, along with renderings of what the new train hall is expected to look like.
