Once Considered Lost, The Revival of "The Apu Trilogy"
Satyajit Ray’s seminal masterpiece, “The Apu Trilogy,” is widely considered to be one of the greatest accomplishments in the history of cinema, and the trilogy that helped bring India into the golden age of international art-house cinema. After a fire severely damaged the film's original negatives in 1993, its restoration was long thought to be impossible. What was left of the original negatives was salvaged by the Academy Film Archive, and it wasn’t until modern technology improved that this restoration was possible. Satyajit Ray’s son, Sandip Ray, a filmmaker in his own right as well as head of the Satyajit Ray Foundation, and Peter Becker, president of the Criterion Collection, discuss spearheading the restoration and the importance of the film.
