Until the debut of “Serial,” in the fall of 2014, podcasting was considered niche, as opposed to the mainstream medium of broadcast radio. “Serial” ’s investigation of a cold murder case in Baltimore changed that perception. In this interview, “Serial” ’s host and co-creator, Sarah Koenig, tells David Remnick why she never fit in as a newspaper writer, and how that led her to the style she cultivated as a producer of “This American Life” and then “Serial.” Koenig also discusses the challenges of the new season, in which she tells the story of Bowe Bergdahl, the soldier who walked away from his base in Afghanistan and was captured by the Taliban.
