He discusses the 16 months he spent as a Marine lieutenant who served with the first ground combat unit deployed to Vietnam in 1965 and details his life after he returned home -- psychologically and emotionally destroyed. He also appears in Ken Burns's new 10-part, 18-hour PBS series "The Vietnam War," which premieres on September 17.
