Please Explain: Kitchen Tools

All living things need to eat, but only humans cook...and how we cook has evolved and grown more sophisticated since our earliest days. We have nonstick skillets, automatic espresso machines, digital meat thermometers, and high-speed blenders. But in our earliest days, we didn't even have pots to cook in. On this week’s Please Explain, Bee Wilson, author of Consider the Fork: A History of How We Cook and Eat, tells us all about the history of our cooking tools—when and how they were invented and how they’ve changed the foods we make.

If blunt knives for eating food were introduced as a safety measure, did steak knives become tableware only after violence at meals was very rare?

Quite a few years ago, I heard a radio interview with Julia Childs, where she was asked, "What is the most valuable cooking item in the kitchen". While Julia did come to embrace the "food processor", she unhesitatingly said, "Oh, the Wooden Spoon is the most important and useful thing you will find in any kitchen!". :-)

Is there a reason East Asians prefer chop sticks when a shovel (AKA the spoon) makes more sense to my eye.
