With an estimated 10-15 inches of snow in the forecast for the area, Mayor de Blasio said New York City Public Schools would be closed on Thursday.

More than a million students attend the city's public school system, the largest in the nation. Many other school officials base their decision to cancel school on the city's.

The last time the city closed public schools due to snow was Jan. 27, 2015.
