Really? What about 1967, 1973 wars against Israel? The thousands of rockets fired from Hamass Gaza weren't real? The attempted shooting down of passenger planes? The genocidal threats from the Islamist Regime of Iran weren't real? The dehumanizing depictions of Jews as sons of pigs and dogs/apes never happened?

What would you say if Muslims were depicted as Islamists depict Jews?

The only entities self destructing are Islamist entities. See Libya, Syria, Islamist dominated Lebanon, Iraq, Afghanistan. It's called the Arab Spring.

Yes. Progressively so.

Any ultra orthodox Haredi who doesn't want to live in Israel because of its policies can relocate to Gaza, Ramallah, Aleppo, Cairo where they can live their lives as ultra-orthodox Haredi dhimmis in a supposedly tolerant Islamist Ummah. Let's see how tolerant ultra-orthodox Islamists towards ultra-orthodox Haredis and their community infrastructure.

> Your hysterical, right wing Zionist/fascist utopia is not. going. to. happen.

Your hysterical right wing Islamist/fascist utopia will never happen. See Syria where 100,000+ have died in a Civil War - Muslims .v. wrong kind of Muslim.

Every Islamist terrorist attack breeds more contempt of Islamism.

Israel worried about a genocidal Islamist regime - which waged an 8 year war with Iraq - where 1,000,000 people died? You bet.

> Time is running out, and not for the Iranians.

Really? The Persian people are sick of the ayatollahs. Whatever the Shahs faults, he was benign next to the ayatollahs, their fascist revolutionary guard, the religious police and their dress codes, of stoning women to death, the execution of gay teen. The end of the Islamist Regime of Iran is near - from within and without.

Sane people see the calamity Islamism has brought to the world.

@ jgarbuz from Queens

Treaties should mean something but like the rest of the JIDF posters you only acknowledge them when it's convenient. Syria hasn't signed the CWC but it is threatened with attack by a Qatari/Israeli led coalition owing to its use and possession of those weapons. Where is the legal basis for that?

The NPT also requires signatories to disarm. By that standard every major power signatory is in clear and continuing violation.

Bottom line is that Isreal is playing a weak hand poorly. Sure, they have the strongest military in the middle east, so what? Without our UN Veto (the same veto that is so very, very wrong when used by Russia with regard to Syria according to our JIDF posters) they would be international pariahs 10x over.

Isreal, whatever the propagandists say, is a European colony, the last one, and the rest of the world is finished with colonialism. Isreal needs to walk back the warmongering rhetoric and heal its internal divisions otherwise the future looks very, very bleak.

You make no sense whatsoever. Sorry for you. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED !!! Mr. Lehrer usually says he wants to be fair but this morning's segment with Israeli deputy defense minister wasn't nothing but unfair. He did not give both sides to the store and was favoring and highlighting one point of view. Mr. Danon talks about the Palestinian people like they are a BURDEN and they are less then human. He says he wants to ship them off to Egypt and Jordan like they are some cattle. He says the United States has the same interests and values about human right as Israel does. This is Incorrect the American people including myself view this as Genocide. He says the Palestinian are full of hatred. Of course they are you sold their land ! Just as you would feel if they took back Israel! You called them Terrorist yet you fail to mention the para-military Zionist organizations (Irgun Zvai Leumi and the Stern Gang) which fought against the Palestine state back in the 1930's and 1940's. India, Pakistan and Israel did NOT sign the NPT, and therefore all three have the LEGAL right to develop its nuclear deterrents indigenously. It's all about the treaty. It's not that Israel has any special rights, nor that India or Pakistan have special rights. It's they chose not to give away their rights by signing that treaty.

The Islamic Republic of Iran issued a declaration that nuclear weapons are "un-Islamic". Really? Then why does the Islamic Republic of Pakistan have nukes?

^^Because Iran & Pakistan are two completely different countries. They speak two different languages and the people belong to two different tribes. The only thing they share is a border (with Afghanistan no less) and its a no-mans land run by sectarian warlords. The NY Times magazine had an excellent article about the Iran-Afghan-Pak border and its troubles historically and presently.

Oct. 03 2013 11:15 AM

1.)The genuinely sad thing is that the very qualities that have sustained Israel i.e. its self reliance and fighting spirit are going to end up isolating the country and assuring its eventual break up. Israel is too small and divided to sustain the sort of political blow-back that a fully implemented 2 state solution would create. That's the realpolitik consideration underlying Danon's position. Israel will not be destroyed from without but from within and not by Arabs but by Jews.

2.)Israel cannot destroy Iran's nuclear program without our help and we're not offering it, nor will we while the Iran is running laps around Netanyahu's warmongering rhetoric. A strike on Iran would only delay not eliminate the nuclear program of Iran and would ensure that Iran will go nuclear eventually. Netanyahu is bluffing and when he's called it will be a tremendous loss of face for Israel and the beginning of the end for Isreal with civil war a likely result.

Iran, should have had the same right to have nukes - JUST LIKE ISRAEL.

However, based on its rhetoric and proxy actions, the case is easy to make, that a nuked up Iran will be an existential treat to Israel. Israel has a right to defend itself as it sees fit.

I'm sure Israel has the intelligence to back it up. However, at least half of the things said in Bibi's speech, should have been spoken behind closed doors.

Oct. 03 2013 10:54 AM
jgarbuz from Queens

To Mr.Bad

I will lay out here my solution to the Palestinian problem. It is based on two principles: (1) Jordan will be the Palestinian state; (2) Judah and Samaria will be shared in some arrangement between Jews and the Arabs there.

(1) Eastern Palestine was renamed "Transjordan" in 1922 and became a Bedouin state led by an emir from Mecca named Abdullah. Today, Jordan is made up of a majority of descendents of the refugees of 1948 and '67. The only thing that stands in the way is the Hashemite king and his family. They will not remain forever. When the Hashemites go, it will be a de facto Palestinian state.

(2) Judah and Samaria, or the "WEst Bank" as the Jordanians called it in 1950 when they illegally annexed it, will be split between the Jews and Palestinian Arabs. Area C will become part of Israel; Areas A & B will become attached to the Palestinian state in what is called today Jordan, and part of the State of Palestine in the future.

That is the only rational answer. No more Arab states.

Oct. 03 2013 10:44 AM
Edward from Washington Heights AKA pretentious Hudson Heights

There already is a Two-State Solution.

Israel and Jordan.

Perhaps they are calling for a three/four/five state solution?

Seeing the slaughter going on in Syria, 100,000+, poison gassing of civilians in Syria, the Arab world is hardly ready for peace with other people when they can't get along with fellow Muslims.

http://www.aljazeera.com/programmes/talktojazeera/2011/08/201185103022120129.html

May we know what he does believe in? More white phosphorous perhaps? How will Israel preserve it pure Jewish identity when Palestinians comprise a larger part of the Israeli population than Jews? What is Mr. Dannon's final solution to the Palestinian question since peaceful coexistence is apparently off of the table.

(This comment has been moderated. Please be mindful of WNYC's policy to stay on topic, be civil, and be brief.)

Oct. 03 2013 10:26 AM
jgarbuz from Queens

To Mr. Bad

In 1948, when Palestinian Arabs outnumbered Jews by 2 to 1, and English officers were directing the Jordanian army, and 7 well equipped Arab armies attacked the newly declared Jewish state, the US had an arms embargo on both sides, but of course the Arabs were getting their arms from the British.
The FBI arrested Jews in the US who were trying smuggle arms to the new Jewish state. Only one country sold arms to the Jews, Czechoslovakia. It was Czech arms that saved the Holocaust survivors and the native born Jews of the new state. As you know ,the Jews won that war. It made one large mistake.. It did not finish its victory by rolling all the way to the Jordan river and expelling all the Arabs from liberated Jewish soil.
Despite all the hoopla of how the US was the first to recognize Israel, et cetera, the US did not give Israel a single bullet at that time.

So don't presume that Israel's existence is totally tied to US support. Switzerland as democracy existed without US support for centuries, even before the US came into existence. The Arab fantasy that if America stops support of ISrael, that that is the beginning of the end of Israel, that is just another delusion based on self-deception. As Netanyahu repeatedly said, Israel can and will defend itself by itself if it deems it necessary, and will use whatever weapons it has at its disposal to do so if necessary. Yes, Israel will suffer greater damage if it goes it alone, but then GErmany and Japan and South Korea rebuilt themselves. Israel today has oil and gas and lots of technology. It's the hopeless case of 1948, where still the Jews won their state at great cost, but won nonetheless.
