Millions of New Yorkers who own their homes and have household income below $500,000 could lose a valuable property tax rebate if they don't act by midnight on December 31st.
New Yorkers are being asked to re-register for the STAR exemption, after the authorities learned that large numbers of people had received tax breaks on second homes, which are not eligible.
It takes about four minutes to sign up for the STAR program online.
So far, New York City residents are registering more slowly than homeowners in other parts of the state.
About 2.6 million people in the state receive rebates through the STAR program; 250,000 of those are in New York City.
Homeowners who don't make the deadline will miss out on the rebate in 2014.
