New Releases, July 2014

For this New Sounds, listen to the latest from Zion80, a horn-driven Jewish Afrobeat party band led by guitarist Jon Madof. The name is a nod to the band Africa 70, which was the great Afro-pop band put together by Fela Kuti in Nigeria. On their latest release, Zion80 take on more Jewish-themed music - in this case, Madof’s creative arrangements of 8 tunes from John Zorn’s “Book of Angels” from Masada Book II.

Then, hear Richard Reed Parry’s "Quartet for Heart and Breath" as performed by two different ensembles: yMusic and Kronos Quartet. It’s an exercise in music as the reflection of the body, where musicians play composed music determined by his/her breathing or heart-rate, while keeping pace via stethoscope. Plus, music by King Crimson arranged for cellist Maya Beiser, electroacoustic music from Jacaszek & Kwartludium, and more.
