The Pit Scene, Lascaux Cave (© Hans Hinz / ARTOTHEK)

For this New Sounds, it’s the second in a three-part series of new music whose works have been inspired by painters, and sometimes specific paintings. Hear music from Tracy Silverman, his “Matisse: La Danse” with layers of electronic violin, along with the expansive “23 Constellations of Joao Miro” by Bobby Previte.  Then, there’s also music by Morton Subotnik, inspired by collage artist Max Ernst and music by Julia Wolfe, inspired by Dutch master, Vermeer.  Plus, a work by Daniel Lentz after the famous Palaeolithic cave paintings in Lascaux, in France, in the Dordogne region of southwestern France.  And more.

Composer and improviser Joel Garten's music is inspired by visual art, including Giorgio Morandi, Mondrian, Jackson Pollock and Richard Diebenkorn. He is also a painter himself. There is some of his music on his website www.joelgarten.com

Interesting! I doubt that I'm the first commenter to mention some other painter-inspired pop songs, but here goes:

"Meet James Ensor" by They Might Be Giants
"Vincent" by Don McLean
"Magritte" by John Cale (who also has numerous songs about literary figures and characters), the album "Songs for Drella" (w/Lou Reed), and
his cover of Jonathan Richman's immortal "Pablo Picasso"
