Listen to music with darkness to it for this New Sounds. There’s transportive music for brass and percussion ensemble by Iceland’s Anna Thorvaldsdottir, who was recently named a New York Philharmonic Kravis Emerging Composer. This work, “Into- Second Self” has an Arctic cool, and by extension – darkness about it, and when performed, envelopes an audience in pitch-less drafts of wind sound, with its four horns, three trombones, and three more percussionists,   positioned around the hall. Then, listen to music by Tan Dan, written in 2000 to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the death of Johann Sebastian Bach. The work, “Water Passion after St. Matthew,” is scored for soloists, chorus, and incorporates the sound of water, whether poured or splashed, as well as water stones, the water phone and other acoustic and electronic instruments.

Hear music for one of the two days of the year where light & dark are perfectly equal by Raphael Mostel and his Tibetan Singing Bowl Ensemble, written for the Autumnal equinox. It’s an acoustic music ritual for a large reverberant space, which calls for 40 musicians, and was recorded live at the premiere in the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City back in 1985. Plus, hear “The Night Mare,” a nocturnal work by Brooklyn-based Christopher Cerrone, for the Red Light New Music collective, from a collection of commissions by the group's founding composer-directors.
