Monday Morning Politics: Post-Nuclear Options

Monday, November 25, 2013

US Secretary of State John Kerry delivers a speech during a press conference at the CICG (Centre International de Conferences Geneve) after talks over Iran's nuclear programme in Geneva. Nov. 24, 2013 (ALEXANDER KLEIN/AFP/Getty)

Late Saturday night, President Obama announced an historic agreement with Iran to slow down that countries nuclear weapons development, in exchange for easing sanctions -- setting the table for a possible long-term deal. Fred Kaplan, "War Stories" correspondent for Slate and author of The Insurgents: David Petraeus and the Plot to Change the American Way of War (Simon & Schuster, 2013), and Julianna Goldman, White House correspondent for Bloomberg TV and Bloomberg News, discuss the details, from diplomacy to political impact.

"Good job Barack."

First-name basis with the Prez, eh?

"The clerics call for the destruction of Israel, Bibi calls for airstrikes in Iran - ugh. I need to go read the God Delusion and laugh this lunacy off."

Like most Zionists, Benjamin Netanayhu is hardly religious at all. He just invokes religious references/sensibilities (often distorted), /selectively/, to his advantage.

Excellent guest, Fred Kaplan! Thank you Brian! You should let him speak more! He certainly knows his stuff.

Great to hear Fred speak substantively about this deal and about how ridiculous Republicans, and their latest convert Chuck Schumer, actually are. A hawk is a hawk is a hawk is a hawk. Nothing ever changes - as Fred said these are likely the same whiners that opposed negotiations with the Soviet Union. War mongering is in their blood - it's what they do best. Which means they aren't much different than the right wing clerics or the dictators they blood lust after - all cut from the same mold - the biblical mold of dichotomous thinking. Yuck. Enough is enough.

Negotiation does not mean capitulation. In fact, the purpose of sanctions is to bring the knuckleheads to the table - which is exactly what happened. I always laugh at the mentality of a Middle Eastern hawk of any nationality. Anyone who believes that Iran would ever give up their "thorn" in the side of Israel and western powers - why would they? I wouldn't. There's been no reason to until now. Pakistan has the bomb. India has the bomb. Israel has the bomb. Russia has the bomb. We have the bomb. Who doesn't have the bomb? Texas? (It's only a matter of time...)

Israel spends its time threatening to attack Iran - and Iran is supposed to just sit there and not use the same stupid blathering tactic? You can bully a child into submission with a power differential - but you can't do the same with a nation state - or an adult.

Good job Barack. Good job John Kerry. Good job Europe. Good job Russia. Good job China. Good job Iran.

Ignore the naysayers. They're just jealous because we no longer buy into their "Armageddon" BS. The clerics call for the destruction of Israel, Bibi calls for airstrikes in Iran - ugh. I need to go read the God Delusion and laugh this lunacy off.

This past Friday was the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

Tragically, less than five years later, his brother, Senator and Presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy was also assassinated by a "palestinian".

And Bill Ayers, BOs "progressive" mentor, wrote a book, dedicated to, among others, the assassin of RFK.

Mr. Bad from CAIR,

On November 04, 2013 your "islamic republic of iran" held their annual "death to America" rally.

Anyone who believes that the "islamic republic of iran"'s nuclear program is as it claims, "peaceful", ask yourselves, why is irans nuclear program buried deep underground, spread across the country.

That is hardly the actions of a "nukes for peace" program.

If nuclear weapons are "un-islamic", then why does the "islamic republic of pakistan", the former haven of osama bin laden, have nuclear weapons. Is irans fellow "islamic republic" un-islamic?

iran and iraq had an 8 year war - (1980 - 1988). 1,000,000 people died. iran used children to clear mine fields left over from that inter-islamist war.

Religion and politics don't mix well in Western nations. How can the FAKE "anti-war" movement accept what an iranian cleric has to say?

Is it because the FAKE "anti-war" movement and the "islamic republic of iran" both hate the US? A Red/Green Axis.

How can "progressive" people side with the most regressive regime on the planet?

What is "progressive" about irans public executions of gay teens, dress codes for women, beard codes for men, stoning women to death?

While the Iranian Nazi regime has gotten a respite by the oil thirsty Great Powers, Kerry has bought a shot at the White House in 2016. Reminds me of 1939 when the British implemented the White Paper that virtually closed Palestine to Jewish immigration fearing that the Arabs would cut the oil pipeline as war with Germany loomed nearer. It was oil over Jews then, and remains the same today.

Nov. 25 2013 10:38 AM

Thank you, Mr Kaplan , for a welcome voice of reason, knowledge, and truly pro-American intentions regarding not just the Iranian nuclear issue but also directing attention to the crucial, underlying conflicts in the Middle East.

This is a pro-American, pro-reason, fact-based perspective that has been dangerously missing from much recent American political discourse and all too infrequent on WNYC whenever discussion touches matters that concern Israel.

And people say there's no right wing in New York.... Unmentioned, of course, is the fact that Israel has had nuclear weapons for a while. I know, because I asked Ethan Bronner of the NY Times, who said, on the next to last page of the arts section, "a hundred nuclear weapons'. (Odd art form: nukes. Not exactly creative). David Remnik, editor of the New Yorker, repeated that on Charlie Rose. Where's the outrage about Israel's nukes? Oops. Asking that question makes me ipso facto anti Israel and anti semitic. Why do people assume that Iran is suicidal and would strike Israel? Know's it's hard to do, but could someone figure out how much $ is going to AIPAC right now to buy votes against Iran. Meanwhile on Haaretz, where I getnews about Israel, in a historical piece, Moshe Dayan asked Golda Meir for permission to use a nuke against whoever Israel's enemy was at the time. "NO', she answered. Israel is delegitimizing himself, as is Iran. In a BBC poll, Israel is down with North Korea. Germany is the world's most popular nation. Not oddly, Brian isn't covering the fact that J St has come out for the deal. The last, (and only?) time he let Jeremy Ben Ami, head of J St, on his show he only took calls from the Jewish right wing in Brooklyn. They weren't friendly. As I languished on hold.

@steve - republicans seem to forget all the ties and deals they made with all those who later they deemed evil. such as osama, and iran etc...

I think/hope that once Iranians experience life w/fewer sanctions, they won't want to go back to what they've had to deal with for so long. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean their gov't. will do what they want, but it will be harder not to.

What I'm wondering, though, is whether the gov't. could go on enriching uranium in places the inspectors wouldn't know about. Could they let them monitor some sites but have others where they continue enrichment?

Nov. 25 2013 10:26 AM

@chris - no. israel goes by their own rules, that they dictate to the world.

Nov. 25 2013 10:23 AM
Chris from New York

Will the Israelis give up their uranium enrichment and nuclear weapons too?

Nov. 25 2013 10:22 AM

I breathed a sigh of relief when I heard that President Obama effectively stood-up to Netanyahu on the Iran deal.

(No conclusive evidence Iran has a nuclear weapons program. Iran is a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Israel is /not/ and the "open secret" is Israel's extensive nuclear arsenal. Cannot see how an attack on Iran could be anything other than detrimental and dangerous.)

Regarding Gloria Steinem accepting an award from the President: Note how forgiving and overlooking so many purported leftists are when it comes to Obama's record on war, civil liberties, economic justice, etc.

Imagine a candidate with a record that could rival that of Bernie Sanders or Dennis Kucinich on the aforementioned issues but solidly on the right (or at least what is considered as such) on issues such as abortion, the "LGBTQ" agenda, etc.

How far could such a candidate get in today's Democrat Party?

Ya know the funny thing is that George "Mission Accomplished" Bush paved the way for this deal by installing a malleable Shia majority government in Iraq. The Shia crescent is confirmed for a stable political ascent and will eclipse the warmongering Israeli right in regional influence...

Well well well ... the usual suspects are back to complain about how Mr. Bad was right, is always right, continues to be right... scary times for 5th column AIPAC trolls corrupting our political process. This is a great move by Obama, he has finally broken the link between US foreign policy in the middle east and purely Israeli interests. That is why they were dancing in the streets in Tehran.

From Wikipedia :
VERY Interesting, apparently the "light of the Aryans" our coup installed ally, the Shah of Iran who sided with the Nazis, was secretly trying to make a nuclear weapon and then...."After the 1979 revolution, a clandestine nuclear weapons research program was disbanded by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini (1902–1989), who considered such weapons forbidden under Muslim ethics and jurisprudence."

OH the Humanity! talk about the Hindenberg of political pundit BS! Obama is appeasing Iran with DAILY inspections? Lets see what SOME republicans have done .. from Wikipedia ..."President Gerald Ford signed a directive in 1976 offering Tehran the chance to buy and operate a U.S.-built reprocessing facility for extracting PLUTONIUM from nuclear reactor fuel. The deal was for a complete 'nuclear fuel cycle'. ( and of course!) At the time, Richard Cheney was the White House Chief of Staff, and Donald Rumsfeld was the Secretary of Defense. "

Fred ("I love Obama") Kaplan - here's another point of view by someone with much more knowledge and experience than this Slate blogger-

ABJECT SURRENDER BY THE UNITED STATES - WHAT DOES ISRAEL DO NOW?
John Bolton – Weekly Standard

“Israel still must make the extremely difficult judgment whether it will stand by as Iran maneuvers effortlessly around a feckless and weak White House.

An Israeli military strike is the only way to avoid Tehran’s otherwise inevitable march to nuclear weapons, and the proliferation that will surely follow.”

Undoubtedly, an Israeli strike during the interim deal would be greeted with outrage from all the expected circles. But that same outrage, or more, would also come further down the road.”

Gloria Steinem, the great abortion supporter, wins an award at the White House. Tells us where we are.

The relics of St. Peter were on display for the public yesterday at the Vatican, for the first time in history.

Today Vladimir Putin visits the Vatican, Christianity is growing in Russia and they might help to re-Christianize the West, as predicted by our Lady of Fatima.

About the deal with Iran, one is reminded of one of the traditions about the end of the world - people will be saying that peace has arrived. How many Democrats will break away from the president's position?
