Meet the Tar Sands Pipeline Protesting "Valve Turners" Facing Criminal Charges

The Leonard Lopate Show | Mar 3, 2017

Climate activist Ken Ward and filmmaker Steve Liptay join us to discuss citizen action on climate change and the efforts to continue pipeline protests in Standing Rock and elsewhere, given the crackdown on journalists and filmmakers. Ward is a “valve turner,” an activist who attempts to shut down all tar sands oil coming into the United States from Canada by manually turning off pipelines in Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota and Washington state. Liptay filmed one of the oil sands pipeline actions simultaneous to Ken's action in Washington state and Minnesota. Both men are now facing charges that may lead to steep fines and possibly jail time.
