In 1952 the eccentric American artist and film maker Harry Smith released his famous Anthology of American Folk Music. In 2026 the guitarist Marisa Anderson released her album The Anthology of UnAmerican Folk Music, in which the veteran musician recreates traditional songs from places that the USA has been in conflict with in the past 70s years – so, southeast Asia, the Middle East, the former Soviet Union. From Interpretations of compositions ranging from Pakistani qawwali to Syrian taqsim to songs from the long gone teahouses of Afghanistan, Marisa Anderson plays at Union Pool in Brooklyn on June 9-10.
