Old Train Ride Gets Prestigious Book Award

Tuesday, January 28, 2014

A book that takes readers on the first transcontinental railroad ride in 1869 is the winner of America's highest honor for children's picture books.

The American Library Association awarded Brian Floca's "Locomotive" on Monday. Floca has been an illustrator for 20 years.

"I live and I work in Brooklyn and there's so many children's book authors and illustrators who work here. And so many of them are so good and to be singled out like that, it feels great," Floca said.

The ALA also awarded the Newberry Medal to Kate DiCamillo's book "Flora and Ulysseys."
