The Women Who Shaped the Politics of the Civil War Alongside Lincoln's Generals

The wives of Lincoln's top generals greatly influenced their husbands' politics and decisions during the Civil War. In Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives: Four Women Who Influenced the Civil War for Better and for Worse, Candice Shy Hooper examines the early lives of Jesse Fremont, Nelly McClellan, Ellen Sherman, and Julia Grant and draws from diaries, letters and other primary sources to reveal how they affected the outcome of the Civil War. 

Event: Candice Shy Hooper will be in conversation with Harold Holzer about Lincoln’s Generals’ Wives on June 14th at Hunter College (47-49 E. 65th St) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Discussion, with book signing and cocktail hour to follow.
