Leslie Mendelson is based here in New York, but her songs often evoke the sound of California’s Laurel Canyon – in fact, her fans include Jackson Browne, one of the leaders of that sunny, folk-rock scene. But she’s also an unapologetic fan of straightahead rock’n’roll – one song on her latest album begins with the question “why don’t they play rock and roll on the radio anymore?” Her song, “Other Girls,” is a stomping rocker that puts a little spin on the usual story of a woman who doesn’t want to hear her partner talking about other girls.
