Jordan Peele’s new film “Get Out” is a genre-bending, groundbreaking thriller— it’s also a sharp critique of racism in America. Kurt speaks with Peele about his directorial debut, race in the film industry, and the parallels between comedy and horror. Peele says he “think[s] they're ‘The Shining’ twins of genres. They both depend on a certain amount of reality.”

Plus, University of Michigan media studies professor Robin Means Coleman helps put “Get Out” in the context of black horror film history. She says that Peele is smart to use the genre to talk about race because there are no boundaries in horror. “It works to have conversations about things in our social and political world that we wouldn't typically have.”
