Jonathan Miles on Want Not, His New Novel

Monday, December 09, 2013

Jonathan Miles talks about his latest comic novel, Want Not. It opens on Thanksgiving Day, and presents three characters in various states of disrepair—a young freegan couple living off the grid in New York City; a once-prominent linguist, dealing with the dissolution of his marriage and his father’s battle with Alzheimer’s; and a self-made debt-collecting magnate with a trophy wife.

Dumpster Diving? I love it. I used to be a professional dumpster diver and did it to find great things, exercise (it requires a lot of walking), and make money. I no longer work in Manhattan but whilst I did, I found:

A painting appraised at $5800. That was 10 years ago - I recently sold that for $1200.00.

Two 100 year old copper industrial lamps I sold for $600.00

Ten copies of unopened Microsoft Office my own employer threw out one Halloween. For this dive, into a dumpster parked in front of our office, I went back at night with a Halloween costume on so no one would recognize me. I sold the copies of office for $2K.

I miss doing this as I am no longer in Manhattan. I never knew what I would find and people used to look at me as though i were a bum until I started racking up thousands in sold goods.
