Joan Rivers, Mad Diva

Joan Rivers talks about the everyday life of the ultimate diva—herself. In her new book Diary of a Mad Diva she writes about a family vacation in Mexico and about trips between New York and Los Angeles, where she mingles with the stars and delivers blistering critiques on current events, pop culture, and celebrities.

Joan was given a diary by her daughter for Christmas, and after complaining that she wasn't gifted a "certificate for Botox," she began writing in it and ultimately created her new book. The preface warns that anyone who takes its contents seriously is an "idiot."

In this exclusive interview, the 81 year old comedienne tackles topics for all the non-idiots: ranging from the "brilliant" Kardashian sisters, to why she doesn't wear the color yellow, to why she'll never apologize for her jokes.

Years ago she peaked with the disclosure that when she was presented to Queen Elizabeth, she didn't know whether to curtsy or lick the back of her head. Now she is just a nasty old broad trading on the memories of a time when she WAS funny.

Seen Rivers throw a pencil at a recepcionist, and almost hit her eye a couple off years back. You see the poor girl did not recognize the "star"
Rivers is a Racist to boot as Wayne Johnson Ph.D. says.
It was down hill for her after her bit part in the Swimmer with Burt Lancaster!!!

I love her... I always will... she is a groundbreaking female comic genius of epic proportions, no one can touch her and you all need to mellow out a bit... and at 81 she is incredible. You go girl... all the way to the bank...

I'm not going to spend any money on her books. But it is good for her she got her face so wonderfully fixed because it is impossible to listen to that hoarse throat of hers. She's funny at times but why doesn't she write an honest book about what women really want in a man? :) I bet it comes down to three things, all starting with the letter "C." One is Cash. Another is Control. And I'll leave the third "C" as a thought experiment. But she is right, that men are dumb! They've taken men for a ride in this country as in no other in the world.

Would love to know if Joan remembers her various appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show in the late 1960s. My organization (CARE for Sandy — repairs (for Free!) photos damaged by October 2012's hurricane....

One Staten Island family contributed 50 candid snaps of film, TV and music luminaries captured before/after Ed Sullivan appearances (though apparently hundreds of other damaged photos exist). The photographer on most occasions as photographed for her special keepsake album? A preteen paparazzi, who is pictured here with Joan (looking gorgeous!) in this marvelous cityscape, sidewalk shot that is currently being restored:

Other photographed stars include a very young Sonny & Cher, Janis Joplin, Gene Kelly, Natalie Wood, Kirk Douglas, Lucille Ball, The Mamas & the Papas, Joan Rivers, Barbara Eden, Sal Mineo, Sly & the Family Stone, Barbara Streisand, Dinah Shore, Harry Belafonte, Raquel Welch, ZsaZsa Gabor, Frank Sinatra Jr. and so on...

Joan. Would you like a print once restored?

jgarbuz from Queens -- For the answer to your question, read Ms. Rivers' book "Men Are Stupid... And They Like Big Boobs: A Woman's Guide to Beauty Through Plastic Surgery."

Btw, great title, Joan!

"mexicans are short"….she's racist and she wears animals that have been anally electrocuted. besides that she is genuinely funny.

No, Ms. Rivers, not *every* woman wants to have plastic surgery/Botox or to talk about who has or hasn't had it. Or to ever hear another word about the Kardashians.

Yo, there are obviously many trifling things about this woman. But there's no denying that she's a comedic genius.

Who is her plastic surgeon? I have to admit, he or she does some fabulous work. She does look great. And it does keep her in the business at her age, so I guess looking good never hurts.

I read Ms. Rivers' book "I Hate Everyone... Starting with Me." The tasteless jokes were all so wrong, and yet the belly laughs felt so right! Keep slugging away, Joan.

What do you think of television shows like 'Girls'? What about the prevalence of gross out humor in today's movie comedies?
