Jeanette Winterson’s Christmas Spirit

Jeanette Winterson has written about feminism, queer identity, sex, and class for the past thirty years, in both fiction and nonfiction. So her latest book, “Christmas Days,” a collection of short stories and recipes related to the holiday, comes as something of a surprise. She tells The New Yorker’s Deborah Treisman that the holiday was a bright spot in a childhood she describes as Dickensian, and the only time that her “flamboyantly depressed mother was actually happy.”
