Japan Marks Third Anniversary Of Devastating Earthquake
Tuesday, March 11, 2014
Three years ago today, an earthquake and tsunami left nearly 19,000 dead, destroyed coastal communities and triggered a nuclear crisis at the Fukushima Power Plant.
Today, 270,000 people are still displaced from their homes, including many in the area around the plant. Some of them will never be able to return to their homes because of radioactive contamination.
As he marked the anniversary of the disaster today, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe pledged to boost the rebuilding efforts.
The BBC’s Rupert Wingfield-Hayes joins Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson to discuss the anniversary.
