I had to deal with my mother's Alzheimer's for 7 years before she died, and I would not wish that on my worst enemy, and I hope to have the strength to kill myself in time before I imposed that horror on anybody else.

It's very easy for Jane Pauley to encourage people in their 50s or older to make the most of the second half of their life. She's clearly very financially secure. Many baby boomers in her age bracket have been 'involuntarily retired' after being laid off, cannot find a job, are struggling to make ends meet, and wonder if they will be able to enjoy what she takes for granted as retirement. They don't have the luxury of existential navel gazing, wondering how to transition into an exciting life chapter in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and possibly beyond. ... Yeah, life sure is different for her generation — and so is a lot of her generation's notion of 'retirement.'
