The election of Jackie Biskupski as Salt Lake City’s first openly gay mayor attracted attention even from outside conservative Utah. Then, two days later, the Mormon Church announced harsh new policies on gay couples. David Haglund, an editor at The New Yorker, who was born in Utah and raised Mormon, talked to Biskupski about the Mormon Church’s response to the evolution of gay rights.
