If you weren’t on the internet last week (apparently there were holidays) you might’ve missed this small story about Iron Maiden. A blog called citeworld wrote that the band was using data about where their music was most pirated in order to plan their tours.
It was a mini-story, but it circulated because it read like a morality tale. The moral was that bands should be pragmatic in the face of piracy. People like these stories.
Turns out, this one wasn’t true. Unlike the last thirty hoaxes, this doesn’t seem to have been the result of anyone intentionally lying, but rather just sloppy reporting from an obscure tech blog, which other folks picked up uncritically because it was too small to be suspicious of. Anyway. Happy Monday. Be suspicious of everything.
