Mary Lattimore

The harp has a reputation for delicacy and good behavior. But just what sort of music gets made on the harp is up to the harpist. Some performers are extending the instrument into new territory, and their music is devilishly heavenly. David Garland presents new and old recordings by experimental harpists Mary Lattimore and Zeena Parkins, harp accompanying songs by Joanna Newsom and Baby Dee, jazz harpists Dorothy Ashby and Alice Coltrane, a couple of the harp's international cousins the Japanese koto and Malian kora, plus a new project by John Zorn, The Testament of Solomon, which features harpist Carol Emanuel with guitarst Bill Frisell and vibraphonist Kenny Wollesen.
