Insider Attacks in Afghanistan

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Journalist Matthieu Aikins lives in Kabul and has been reporting from Afghanistan since 2008. He examines the troubling rise and potential causes of “insider attacks” in Afghanistan and looks at whether we’ll ever be able to leave the country. His article “Portrait of an Assassin” is in the October 7 issue of Mother Jones.

I am totally not persuaded by Mr. Aikens' repeated but unsupported assertion that American interests are served by having ANY military or policing role in Afghanistan, Iraq or anywhere else in the area. Very much to the contrary, even if the area becomes completely saturated by the most virulent terrorist projects, regimes and populations, America is better served by leaving immediately, stopping the flow or all aid to the area (including BOTH Israel and Egypt) and admitting to itself and others that Democratic principles cannot be exported to developing countries at the point of a bayonet (or in the video targeting console of a drone missile platform). So here's the right thing to do. The moral thing to do. Admit we were right in taking out Sadam and Bin Laden, but wrong to think that we had a bigger role or responsibility for the local political development of those countries. We apologize for any inconvenienced caused by our insisting on protecting our citizens' right to live without terrorism at home and abroad, and warn that we'll be back again if they don't learn that we take our defense seriously. Then we pack up everybody, declare victory and go home. Right now. Not another life spent in the adventuring exercises we were tricked into by Bush, Cheney and the parties in interest at Haliburton and Blackwater-cum-intrabang.

I have finished reading the article and am puzzled why anybody could still have doubt why these killings happen.

Pierre Rehov had a wonderful documentary where he interviewed failed suicide killers in Israeli jails. This and the details from the article clearly show that the reason for these attacks is a firm belief by some Muslims that killing an infidel will solve all thei current problems and give them a ticket to paradise.
