Jonathan Blitzer, a writer and editorial staff member at The New Yorker, joins us to discuss his article “Called Away,” (Online: “The Deportees Taking Our Calls”) in the January 23rd issue. He reports from El Salvador, and examines how deportations from the United States have fueled the call-center industry by bringing an influx of English-speaking job-seekers to the country. He found that the call centers offer stable work and income, but the deportees are stigmatized and viewed as gangsters.
