#3799: "House Music": Music From Household Items

Hear “House” music for this show – in that all of the music is made with things one might find around the house. Listen to "Ultimate Care II," the model of washing machine used by the Baltimore-based duo Matmos – and the title of their 2015 album-length soundscape. With that machine’s various noises as the source - rushing water, the spin cycle and agitation rhythms, overload/imbalance beeps, and timer notifications - sounds were digitally manipulated, augmenting the repetitive rhythms and highlighting the whirring, and assembled into a compelling percussive creation.

Paul Lansky samples his sons beating pots and pans – which seem gamelan-esque at times, and layers in the clattering of flatware and plates, along with the clinking of bottles for "Table's Clear." Phillip K. Bimstein samples all of the sounds made by his studio door – from the squeaking and squealing of the hinges, the latch closing and knocking upon it – all filtered, then manipulated and built into an entire suite of very percussive “house” music. Plus, Jocelyn Pook makes music based on home answering machines, Franziska Baumann samples glassware, and more.
