Hamza Akram Qawwal & Brothers: Sufi Songs of Pakistan at Roulette
April 11. 8PM. $35+up

The Sufi music tradition known as qawwali goes back to the 13th century, and was brought to the West in the 1990s by the late Pakistani singer Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Championed by rock stars like Peter Gabriel, Nusrat introduced the ecstatic trance sounds of qawwali to a global audience. Qawwali bands are often family affairs, and one of the leading ensembles in Pakistan these days is Hamza Akram Qawwal and Brothers. The band is the 26th generation of an unbroken music lineage that goes all the way back to the beginnings of qawwali music. Hamza Akram Qawwal and Brothers bring the ancient, high-energy qawwali tradition to Roulette on April 11.
