Guest Picks: Art Spiegelman

Monday, January 06, 2014

Artist Art Spiegelman was on the Leonard Lopate Show recently to talk about a retrospective of his work at The Jewish Museum and performing "Wordless" at BAM. He also told us what he's been reading and listening to -- "lotsa salsa" -- and what he liked about the show "Desperate Housewives."

What have you read or seen over the past year that moved or surprised you?

Last movie I saw was Alexander Payne's Nebraska - moving and drily funny.

Loved Blancanieves on Netflix - a modern "silent" movie based on Snow White but about bullfighting - sumptuous visually and musically, very over-the-top in its emotional range but not "campy" and far more savvy than The Artist, the French silent last year.

What are you listening to right now?

Lecuona Cuban Boys, Benny More and lotsa salsa. I just got back from Cuba two days ago.

What’s the last great book you read?

Read The Death of Ivan Ilyich by Tolstoy a couple weeks ago - talented writer - and am in the middle of Conrad's The Secret Agent...I'm trying to catch up on all the Great Works I shoulda read.

Most surprising book I read recently was last year's Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt....Disaster Tourism of America's most blighted spots - intimate, informative reporting on Camden, New Jersey, for example, with great drawings and comics vignettes by Joe Sacco.

What’s one thing you’re a fan of that people might not expect?

I think I fit my alienated New York liberal demographic too well to surprise anyone...but I did think the Republican redhead on Desperate Housewives was really hot.

What’s your favorite comfort food?

          Cashew nuts.
