The New York-based group called Red Baraat starts with the infectious sounds of bhangra – the party music of the Punjab region in India and Pakistan. But they add jazz and funk and pretty much anything else that’s not fast enough to get out of their way. Led by Sunny Jain, who plays the traditional Punjabi double-headed drum slung over his shoulder, Red Baraat has become a dependable dance band for lots of people outside the tradition, and their new album, Bhangra Pirates, is eagerly awaited. The band Red Baraat premieres a song, "Zindabad," as part of our weekly music roundup, and the band brings its irresistible dance grooves to our studio this afternoon for a live session. (Weather permitting.)
Catch Red Baraat at Le Poisson Rouge, 7:30PM on Thursday, March 16.
