Early in his career, Marcus Roberts was known as Wynton Marsalis’s pianist. Now Wynton’s brother Jason is playing drums in Marcus’s band. Since releasing his first solo album in 1988, Marcus Roberts has carved out a rich career that spans the history of jazz, from ragtime to contemporary. Blind since childhood, he went to the same school as Ray Charles, and like that music legend, Roberts has a way of taking familiar music and making it his own, like his version of the Scott Joplin tune, "The Entertainer." The Marcus Roberts Trio is playing tomorrow evening at Columbia University’s Miller Theater.
