The Cuban-born drummer Dafnis Prieto is a singular figure in the world of jazz. He is a renowned composer, and winner of a Macarthur Fellowship – the so-called genius award. Prieto has led various bands, like this sextet you’re hearing in the background, and written works for other ensembles to play as well, but now, he is unveiling his biggest project yet: called, simply and appropriately, the Dafnis Prieto Big Band. Expect rigorously composed but elastically played music when the Dafnis Prieto Big Band makes its debut appearances tonight and tomorrow night at the Jazz Standard.
