The Brooklyn Blowhards play a mix of Aylers jazz and sea chanteys tonight at Barbes.

ARTIST: Brooklyn Blowhards
GIG: Wednesday at Barbes

The iconoclastic musician known as Captain Beefheart once famously said, “one should play the guitar like a man drowning at sea.” Those with less kind takes on Captain Beefheart might point out that his music occasionally sounds like it was literally made that way, but the group Brooklyn Blowhards has taken the open water part of Beefheart’s dictum to heart, and created a record that merges the tempestuous free jazz of the late Albert Ayler with old sea chanteys. The group, led by saxophonist Jeff Lederer, is performing their strange, salty brew tonight at Barbes in Brooklyn.
