Four Bangladeshi Candidates Challenge A Former Long Time Councilmember For A Seat In Queens

WNYC News | Jan 28, 2021

It is a year of unprecedented turnover in the New York City Council: 35 out of 51 council members will be newly elected this year in large part due to term limits.

Some of them have vacated their seats already which means there are few special elections on top of the regular elections coming later this year.

The very first one is under way right now in Council District 24 in Queens, which includes neighborhoods like Fresh Meadows, Briarwood and Jamaica. One candidate held the seat a decade ago: James Gennaro. But he's got several challengers including four Bangladeshi candidates.

Habib Rahman, the host of several shows for the Bangladeshi community on an online channel called TBN24, joined host Sean Carlson on All Things Considered to talk about the race.
