A gunman in a uniform open fired at the Fort Hood military base on Wednesday, killing three people and wounding 16 others before fatally shooting himself. According to reports, the suspect in the shooting has been identified as 34-year-old Spc. Ivan Lopez.

The large Army installation was shut down for several hours. The incident echoed a violent spree carried out in 2009 when an Army psychiatrist went on a shooting rampage.

"We're heartbroken something like this might have happened again," President Barack Obama told reporters in Chicago Wednesday. "I want to just assure all of us, we are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened."

Kate McGee is covering the Fort Hood story for KUT from Austin, Texas. She has connected with the communities around Fort Hood dealing with the aftermath of the shooting incident that, as President Obama noted yesterday, recalls the horror of the shooting on that base in 2009.
