Fewer New Yorkers Are Dying in Traffic Crashes

Transportation Nation | Mar 23, 2015

So far this year, 42 people have been killed by cars in New York City. That’s 24 pedestrians, nine drivers, seven passengers and one cyclist. For the first time, we are also tracking motorcycle deaths as distinct from other drivers; one motorcyclist has been killed this year.

Compared to this time last year, fewer people have been killed in motor vehicle collisions. By March 23, 2014, 50 people had died in traffic crashes. Mayor Bill de Blasio’s Vision Zero initiative seeks to eliminate traffic deaths in New York City by 2025. The program includes redesigning intersections, reducing speed limits, public awareness campaigns, and stepped-up enforcement of dangerous driving violations.

WNYC started tracking every NYC traffic fatality in 2014, and that effort is continuing for 2015 thanks to a collaboration with the The New York World. Reporters from the World will be updating the tracker, with WNYC providing technical and hosting support.
