Authorities say a fast-moving fire that started in an apartment building has killed a child and severely damaged a nearby church in Union City, New Jersey.

At least one other person was seriously injured in the fire, which broke out around 1 am on Saturday on Summit Avenue.

Officials say strong winds caused the fire to spread from the apartment building to another structure and then to the steeple of Saints Joseph and Michael Catholic church.

The child who was killed in the fire apparently lived in the building where the blaze started. The child's name and other details have not been released.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
