A Farm Grows in Newark

The staff writer Ian Frazier visits an industrial building in Newark, New Jersey, where a vertical farm is flourishing. He witnesses a towering array of steel beds where baby salad greens grow aeroponically—that is, in the air, with nutrients supplied by a mist. While it may sound futuristic, AeroFarms aims to grow tons of produce this way soon, and even at a profit. Frazier speaks with Ed Harwood, the chief science officer at AeroFarms, who designed much of the equipment, about trial and error and the joys of inventing.
