Emojli, the emoji-only social network whose reality I jadedly doubted earlier this summer, is here. As promised, the (app-only, and for now, iOS only) network allows you to register an emoji-only username, and send emoji-only messages to your friends.
I’m so glad this is for real. When I first wrote about Emojli my concern was that it was another of the internet’s infinite hoaxes, despite insistence it was not. My hope was that it would function as a place to mess around with the variable meaning of the limited emoji character set. Basically, a playground for language. There's nothing terribly complex to the final product, you just send messages. But so far —for me, at least — it has been a fun way to play with meaning, which rules.
