Wednesday, January 08, 2014

Eleni Mandell performs live and talks about her new album, “Let’s Fly a Kite.” When she was on a tour with Nick Lowe, Eleni became friends with Nick's producer Neil Brockbank and they agreed to make this album together. It includes two-steps, waltzes and weepers inspired from years past.

Eleni Mandell is performing at the Saint in Asbury Park, NJ, January 28, and at Mercury Lounge in NY on January 30.

I saw this women perform live at the Bell House, she is good live and as much as people tend to sound alike when it's just them and their trusty guitar, this singer writes refreshing lyrics.
I encourage the commenters to give her lyrics a close listen.

The first comment about this kind of singer in general sounds about right to me, but this singer -- Eleni Mandel -- doesn't even sound THAT good. I am not a performer and inflict my singing only on myself, but I can sing as well as she does. (And forgive me if I didn't get the joke, but when she explained that her ex-boyfriend is now her kids' "nanny", she said the best thing about that is that she underpays him. What a giggle!)

For the life of me, I can't discern one female "folksie, rock" singer from another these days. Where the vocal fry was the thing of the last few years - there's this lilt - for want of a better word - that too many females sing with these days, making them all sound the same. If you skip on over to Soundcheck, there's a 100 or more of these singers there all sounding nearly the same.

They all tend to sound like ones grade school music teacher, good enough to listen to for a minute or two...but all missing that extra something to make them stand out...and lure me in and to seek them playing live.

Could some play a guitar like thy actually own it, and belt a tune out that isn't all so saccarin ?
