Dr. Omer Salih Mahdi, who worked as a translator for George Packer in Iraq, relocated to Indiana after two of his brothers were kidnapped and a Shia militia killed his father. Now a doctor at a hospital in Indianapolis, Dr. Mahdi spoke with Packer about what it’s like living in a state that currently refuses to take in Syrian refugees.
