Just days after Catalans voted in favor of an independence referendum that was marred by violent crackdowns by Spanish police, Catalonia President Carles Puigdemont says he will declare independence as early as this weekend.

But opponents say the referendum is illegal under the Spanish constitution and therefore non-binding.  The European Commission, which ultimately would have to respond to a move towards independence, is staying away from the issue for now and the King of Spain says the referendum and the momentum it has created is threatening the stability of the entire country.

Becquer Seguin is assistant professor of Iberian studies at Johns Hopkins University who has been writing about the independence movement for The Nation. He joins The Takeaway to weigh in on the path forward for Catalonia.

This segment is hosted by Todd Zwillich.
