Brooklyn DA Meets with Family of Man Killed by Cops

WNYC News | Aug 10, 2017

The Brooklyn District Attorney's Office is investigating the NYPD killing of a schizophrenic Brooklyn man last month.

The family of Dwayne Jeune met for an hour-and-a-half today with acting-Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez.

Last month, Jeune's mother called 911 because her son was off his meds. A responding officer shot and killed the 32-year-old. Police say Jeune charged at cops with a knife.

Outside the DA's office, family attorney Sanford Rubenstein challenged that story.

“There are independent witness accounts, which are different than police accounts. That will be under investigation by this office,” Rubenstein said.

After the meeting, the district attorney's office released a statement: “We were on the scene of the shooting the day it occurred and began our investigation that day. We are committed to conducting a fair, thorough and impartial inquiry into this matter."

The NYPD is still investigating the shooting. The Police Commissioner said the officers appeared to follow protocol.
