Bonus Weekend Podcast: The History of Advertising

The Leonard Lopate Show | Jun 24, 2017

Last week Andrew Essex, the former CEO of the advertising agency Droga5, was a guest on our show. He argues that this is the moment when advertising, as we know it, may die. Whether or not it is actually on its way out, no one can argue that it hasn’t changed considerably in the digital age. Ads are the way that some of the biggest tech companies in the world stay in business. So for this week’s Bonus Weekend Podcast, we’ve decided to take a look at the history of the industry. In 2002, Leonard spoke with Mary Wells Lawrence, the founding president of the ad agency Wells Rich Greene. In 2008, renowned ad man George Lois talked about his many ad campaigns over the years, and his iconic covers for Esquire Magazine. And in 2015, Leonard spoke with adman Steve Penchina about his very colorful autobiography and how he’d built his multi-million dollar agency.
